The Olympia ::: 25Hours Hotel Sydney

Site-Specific Hotel Room Artwork & Art Direction

I was commissioned by CE Boston Hotels to create a series of site-specific collage artworks for Australia’s first 25Hours Hotel, located within the former West Olympia Theatre in Sydney. The brief was to develop immersive room-based works that responded to the building’s Art House heritage and the experimental cultural energy of 1960s–70s Sydney.

Working closely with Shelley Indyk of Indyk Architects, I developed two connected narratives — Renegade and The Dreamer. Together, the works explore the tension between rebellion and optimism that defined Sydney’s Art House era. Rather than illustrating history directly, I used hand-cut collage to assemble fragments of mood, memory, and cultural cues, creating layered compositions that feel open-ended and emotionally resonant.

Renegade draws from the raw energy of 1970s Sydney nightlife — Kings Cross, Town Hall, and informal creative spaces — where artists and outsiders shaped new cultural directions. The Dreamer shifts into a softer, more hopeful register, referencing music, nature, and collective imagination as catalysts for change.

The artworks were designed specifically for guest rooms, responding to changing light conditions and encouraging guests to engage with the works over time. To realise the final installations, I collaborated with Sydney-based printer Mr Wallpaper to translate the original collages into large-scale, immersive environments while preserving their tactile, hand-assembled qualities.

The result transforms each room into a contemplative, atmospheric space — honouring Sydney’s Art House legacy while inviting guests to reflect, explore, and form their own interpretations.
